BRIAN NIXON WAS WAITING FOR JACK WHEN HE finished depositing Jeff in one of the conference rooms. The serious tilt of his former partner’s head told Jack that things were about to go from bad to worse.

“Oh, see, I don’t want to know whatever you want to say to me,” Jack complained as Brian grabbed his elbow and directed him into the conference room across the hall. The Shadow Lake Police Station wasn’t very big. That meant anybody could come by and see Jack getting a lecture.

“You don’t have a choice.” Brian’s tone was even as he shut the door. He didn’t bother messing with the blinds. Anybody still in the building—which was pretty much the entire department, plus Ivy—already knew there was going to be a scolding. “You’re in trouble,” he said in a measured tone.

“You’re going to have to be more specific,” Jack said. “What exactly am I in trouble for?”

“Oh, don’t play cute.” Brian made a clucking sound with his tongue as he shook his head. He seemed to be carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders as he sank into one of the chairs. “Your partner filed a formal complaint, Jack.”

It wasn’t the response Jack was expecting, and yet he wasn’t exactly surprised. Still, he wanted the specifics. “About what?”

“Do you really not know?” Brian sounded exasperated.

The problem, Jack realized, was that Brian knew him too well. They’d been partners for almost two years, and Brian had taken a fatherly approach when dealing with a traumatized Jack. Then, even when Brian took over as chief, they’d maintained that father-son relationship. On top of that, Brian knew Ivy’s parents extremely well. He’d helped raise her in a way. He wasn’t a hands-on parent to Ivy by any stretch of the imagination. However, his kids were the same age as Ivy and her brother, and they’d all grown up together. That meant Brian was naturally protective of Ivy when she and Jack had started dating. He also knew about Ivy’s special abilities.

That was both a blessing and a curse as far as Jack was concerned.

“I think you should go in there and give Ivy a firm talking to,” Jack suggested. “She shouldn’t have gone to our suspect’s house.”

“Yes, Ivy is totally to blame for that,” Brian drawled. “You’re not to blame at all.”

“I didn’t tell her she could go.”

“Did you tell her she couldn’t go?”

Jack sank down into the chair next to his former partner. “I can’t tell her stuff like that.”

“You mean you don’t want to tell her stuff like that,” Brian countered.

“Maybe it’s a little of that,” Jack hedged. “She has good instincts, though. She’s good at this. I can’t just cut her out of it.”

Brian felt differently, but this wasn’t the time for that argument, he told himself. “Jack, Ivy is an asset to this department. I would never say otherwise. You need to look at this from Kevin’s perspective, though.”

“Kevin has had attitude about her since he first joined our team.”

“Yes, and that’s perfectly understandable.
